Easy lounging on a inflatable mattress in welcome shade from a gay sun umbrella

THE sun pours down, waves gently break along the shore and you're ready to stretch out for a lovely, lazy day on the beach. Here to make you really comfortable is an inflatable mattress, a portable screen to shield you from the choppy little wind that suddenly gets up and an umbrella as a sunshade. Some are makes, others are buys, all will take you comfortably down to the beach.

Beach bag with pull out flap on which you can lie full length is made from 10 ft. of 30-in. wide canvas, 2 ft. 5 in. length of cane and 4 brass eyelets. Oblong bag is 11/2 ft. long, 2 ft. 5 in. wide, with side gussets 4t in. deep at top tapering off to 3 in. at rounded base. Flap for lying on is 5 ft. 6 in. long and 2 ft. 5 in. wide. This flap is joined to the inside of bag top, print sides uppermost if fabric is not reversible. At this join, make hem to take piece of cane for stiffening purposes. Sew pocket of fabric on to inside of bag, so that flap can be tucked away neatly when not in use. Make two handles of canvas and slot through brass eyelets (which you can have fixed by a blind-making shop) and stitch ends securely to bag sides.
Wind screen is a sheet of strong fabric 48 in. wide, supported by three dowels, each drilled to take guy ropes. Ropes are attached by runners to tent pegs which can be embedded in sand or grass. To make screen, you'll need 21/2 yd. of 48-in. material, three 4 ft. 6 in. by 1 in. diameter dowels, 10 yd. white cord, 5 small metal guy runners and 5 tent pegs.
Round off top of one dowel length with chisel, sandpapering smooth. Drill 3/16 in. hole 1 in. from top of dowel to take cord for guy ropes. Sharpen bottom of dowel to point. Repeat with other two dowels.
Cut cord into two 12-ft. lengths and one 6-ft. length. Short length is threaded through centre dowel and knotted at the top. Each 12-ft. length forms a doubled guy line, being threaded through outer dowels with ends meeting at bottom. Thread a guy runner on to ends, which should be knotted to prevent it sliding off.
Fabric screen is 4 ft. high-selvedges coming at top and bottom. Make a hem at either end and take a tuck in centre of screen wide enough for dowel to be slipped through. Tack into position. To put up your screen, push the pegs into ground, attach guy lines, tent fashion, and tighten on guy runners as necessary.
Metal holders keep beakers sand free, there's a bucket bag for transport duties and a screen to keep chill breezes at bay
Beaker holder that keeps your thirst quencher high, dry and sand free, is made from 2 ft. of 1/4 in. diameter aluminium rod. Bend top top of rod into a circle. For circle size, measure diameter of top of beaker, then of bottom. Divide difference and add to lower measurement (i.e. top 3 in. bottom 2 in., size of circle 21/4 in.). To get a good bend, use a tin or something circular of same size as a pattern. Bend top of rod round circular shape. Paint black or a bright colour and it’s ready for drink duty.
Gay bucket bag of tough canvas takes 1 yd. fabric, piece hardboard 101/2 in. square, twelve 1/2 in. brass eyelets and 30 in. white cord.
Cut 101/2 in. diameter circle from hardboard, then cut two 11 in. diameter circles from canvas for bucket base. Cut a strip of canvas 1 yard long and 141/2 in. deep for bag sides, sew 2-in. wide hem at bag top and space the twelve eyelets equally round. Allow 1/2 in. for turning at bag base. Sew hardboard circle between two canvas circles, then stitch this to bag sides. Thread length of white cord through eyelets to make drawstring handle.
Thinking of buying comfort? Then an inflatable air bed is the answer. In brilliant colours, 6-ft. size costs 61s. 3d. (about $8.58)?-inflator, 11s. 9d. (about $1.65)?. Multi-coloured umbrella shields you from too much glare-price is about £5 I5s. (about $16.10)?.

The average price of a new home then was $11700 2.63 times your yearly average wage of $4450.  Which was about 2.17 times the price of a new car $2050. Today?
