Q- How can I tell whether my skin is dry or greasy? It appears to be both and often feels very tender.
A- Dry skins are usually fine textured and fairly sensitive They feel taut after washing in hard water, or from being exposed to cold winds. They also develop rough patches from time to time. Oily skins are much tougher and tend to shine at the slightest provocation.
There is also the combination type of skin which J imagine is what you have. The distinguishing signs are dryness over the cheeks and an oily panel down the centre of the face extending from forehead to chin. Plenty of skin food should help to overcome the sensitivity, but don't apply any additional grease to the middle part of your face.
Q- Little lines are beginning to appear round my eyes. Is there any way of getting rid of them?
A- You should be able to soften the lines, but I can't promise that they will disappear altogether. See that you don't screw up your eyes, a habit which many people have through being short-sighted, and have your eyes tested just in case you need glasses for reading.
Last thing at night, fingerprint a little skin food over the skin surrounding your eyes and leave it to soak in while you sleep. I can send you particulars of an excellent cream specially designed for this purpose, and if you use it regularly those lines should become less noticeable.
Q- Can you suggest a painless way of plucking eyebrows? Whenever I pull out a few hairs the skill gets very red and feels quite lender.
A- Perhaps you have been trying to pluck more than one hair at a time, or have failed to grip each one close to the roots? Either would make the process doubly painful. The correct way to pluck eyebrows is to select one hair at a time, grip it as close to the skin as possible, then give a sharp tweak in the direction the hair lies, never against the growth.
Before you start rub a menthol cone over the brows, or cover them with a hot flannel to open the pores. Menthol is best because it has a mild freezing action which will deaden any sensation temporarily. When you have completed the operation, dab the skin with astringent lotion and if it still feels sore apply a little cold cream to soothe it.
Q- Is dandruff bad for the hair? Brushing always produces a shower of dry scales which I imagine must be dandruff.
A- You should certainly try to clear your scalp, because even dry scales tend to choke the follicles, besides being very unsightly when they fall on to your shoulders. For the time being, switch to a medicated shampoo which will help to counteract the trouble, but if it persists let me know and I will send you particulars of an excellent dandruff lotion.
All you have to do is to apply it every time you wash your hair immediately after shampooing with green soft soap, leave it on for five minutes, then rinse very thoroughly. A weekly treatment should suffice until the dandruff has cleared completely.
Q- Just lately, I have put on half a stone in weight which is more than I like. Do you think a Turkish bath would help me to slim.
A- A Turkish bath would help you to lose a few pounds, depending upon how much you perspire, but the loss would- only be temporary, so I don't really think it's the answer to your problem. Dieting is the only satisfactory way of slimming, and even if you cut down sugar and starches, including bread and potatoes it would help. You should also cut out all snacks and tit-bits between meals, they account for many more calories than you would ever imagine.
