MITRAL VALVE

Blood flow in the heart is controlled by a one-way mitral valve. When the heart is relaxed, valve flaps open, allow blood to drain from auricle to ventricle. Dotted lines indicate a normal valve and red an injured one.

AORTA

Heart contracts, forcing the blood from ventricle into aorta, main artery to the body. In normal heart this pressure closes valve. In rheumatic heart, valve fails to close and some blood spurts back to auricle.

Plastic valve is inserted (previous page) in the opening between flaps of the injured mitral valve. When heart relaxes, the blood flows easily from left auricle to left ventricle through angular hole drilled in the valve.

Valve is closed when the heart contracts, presses agains hole in the plastic and covers it. Since the opening is plugged, all the blood now leaves the contracted ventricle via aorta, none seeps back into the auricle.
