WHICH PAINTING IS WORTH $1,000.00?
The two scenes below might well be twin versions of the same subject by the same artist. Actually the picture at the bottom of the page was painted by Maurice de Vlaminck, famous master of the French school, and is worth about $1,000.00. The other is scarcely worth $10.00. Intended as an exact copy of the Vlaminck, it failed to duplicate correctly the peasant's stride, the bare trees and the general shadowy mood of the original. It is one of the less successful efforts of one of France's most persistent and elusive forgers. Recently his work turned up in a Paris gallery, led police to the apartment of a Parisian housewife where they found a whole cache of fakes and again picked up the trail of the forger whom they had been seeking for more than a year (next page).
