 Forgive Me, Darling

ANN LENNOX ASKS
Is there room for the MAN In your Home?
Has he a special corner to call his own where he doesn't feel crowded out?
BEHIND this apparently frivolous question is a special plea for the man in your life. Have you looked at your home with a critical air recently? If not, why not look now? Has it a strong feminine influence or is there a strictly fifty-fifty balance between male and female taste? In many cases we suspect your poor man is crowded out!
Why not let him have a comer he can call 'all his own,' especially if he is handy round the house and has helped you by making improvements and additions at your request. And if he hasn't? Who knows-perhaps having his own particular comer will persuade him to start now.
In our picture John is enjoying himself, sprawled comfortably in a chair designed to win any man's heart. It has four different lounging positions, simply operated by a mechanism under the seat; a foam rubber head cushion; and a stool which can be used either as a foot-rest or, with the padded top turned over, as an occasional table. Costs from £19 19s.(about $56.06)?, stool from £4 4s. (about $11.80)?
John likes to relax with a pipe so we chose a new sand-blasted model, £1 2s. 6d. (about $3.16)?; a man-sized copper and wood ashtray, £1 13s. (about $4.64)?; a leather pipe rack to keep on the mantelpiece, £1 9s. 6d. (about $4.14; and a giant box of matches which he can't possibly lose-we hope! To complete the picture of comfort-a huge teacup and saucer decorated with a sporting print, £1 5s. 11d. (about $3.64)?
There are plenty of manly comforts available now, all designed to pander to the whims and fancies of your man! You can even buy him a small lectern to prop up his book and save him holding it himself, 7s. 6d. (about $1.05)?  Or -for the man who drops ash on the floor-a pigskin ashtray shaped like a saddle, complete with spurs, which sits firmly on the arm of a chair. Costs £2 2s. 9d. (about $6.11)?
For details, please write at me at the address on page 3, enclosing a stamped addressed envelope.

The pampered male? Comfy chair, cosy fire, pipe-and a cup of tea!
3 famous stars talk about their favourite home comforts
PETER SELLERS. Celebrated Goon! Sellers says: "What I like best is absolutely any armchair- and for me it can't be too deep and comfortable -into which I can flop and relax completely"
STIRLING MOSS Famous racing motorist! Says Stirling: 'My pet -comfort is a stiffel pole. Lamps placed at different heights on the pole direct light where I need it -perfect when relaxing with a book.'
RICHARD HEARNE TV's 'Mr Party!' Says Richard: "Favourite comfort? My bed, after a busy tiring day, when my wife allows me to lie in and brings me tea, and the letters and papers to look at in peace"

The average price of a new home then was $12400 about 2.48 times the yearly average wage of $5010. Which was about 2.28 times the price of a new car $2200. Today?
