WOMAN- TO-WOMAN SERVICE

conducted by RUTH MARTIN

Change of Life

Women of today can look forward with confidence to a time they once dreaded
Great Grandmamma had a pretty tough time of it! She was brought up to believe that her 40th birthday was synonymous with the approach of old age; that it w a 'funny time,' when she could expect all kinds of mysterious things to happen to her.
For instance she anticipated hot flushes, fainting attacks, headaches, 'nerves' in various forms, and, worst of all, severe emotional upsets.
Understandably, she led as sheltered a life as possible at this time, literally waiting for the worst. And nobody was more surprised than she was if it did not happen!
But because we are bound to find a certain amount of trouble when we look for it, it was rare for grand mamma to escape scot free even though the menopause was rarely such an ordeal as she expected.
Not an illness
Now, of course, everything is different. A woman of 40 can live with the teenagers, and not look out of place. If she is a career woman, it is doubtful if the thought of 'retirement' has occurred to her, for she knows that the best years of her life still lie ahead. If she is a wife and a mother she knows that she can still add to her family, and, what is more, enjoy caring for a young baby. Today we know that the average age of the menopause is not 40, as so many women' believe, but 50! We know, too, that it is in no way an illness, but a perfectly natural process which a woman can undergo without any discomfort at all. True, at this time of life certain symptoms tend to appear, but in the vast majority of cases they can be rectified quite simply.
Natural process
As most of us now know, menstruation is simply one part of the body's continuous preparation for pregnancy. Each month the lining of the womb prepares itself to receive and house a fertilized egg cell, which will eventually grow into a baby.
When this egg cell is not fertilized, the womb's preparations become superfluous, and so the lining disintegrates and comes away from the body in the form of the monthly period.
The way in which this happens depends upon the way in which certain glands work in harmony with each other. When Nature decides that there is no longer any need for a woman to be able to produce children, some of these glands gradually cease of to work, and then the monthly periods eventually disappear.
When the glands that are responsible for menstruation slow down, others have to adapt themselves to the change. Some must work harder and they may not find it too easy. Perhaps they tire from time to time, which upsets the rhythm still further, or perhaps they work extra hard.
But whichever it is, they soon become used t. the new regime, and perfect harmony is restored again. When our glands are thrown off balance, we notice it in a variety of ways.
Glandular disharmony
Think of the few days before a period is due the irritability, the exhaustion, or the sudden burst of energy, the unaccountable depression or the feeling that the whole world is against us. All those feelings are due to glandular disharmony, but they do not worry us unduly because we know that they will disappear.
So it is with the menopause. The unpleasant symptoms, if they do arise, will vanish in time, quite spontaneously.
However, and this is important no woman should wait for this to happen if she is suffering in any way. Today, doctors are well aware of the problems that are sometimes associated with the menopause, and no woman is regarded as 'neurotic' if she seeks advice for various vague, and often difficult to describe complaints.
Science can help
Glandular extracts (to make up the deficiencies), sedatives, and other treatments will relieve distressing symptoms by restoring our complete physical harmony.
They are there for the asking and we should avail ourselves of these medical advantages, not only for our own sakes, but for the sake of our job, our family, and our friends!
It is quite impossible to deal fully with this subject in one short article. For this reason I would like any woman who is interested to read my booklet entitled "Change of Life." It costs Is. and is obtainable from WOMAN'S OWN Booklets, Tower House, Southampton St., Strand, London, W.C.2.
It explains the process of the menopause simply and thoroughly, and also shows how any unpleasant symptoms, should they arise can be reduced to an absolute minimum, if not a voided altogether.
