Woman's Own November 27 1957 Page 44

Dear Diana Day
Make a perfect chignon with a rose
My hair is almost shoulder-length, not quite long enough for a proper chignon, which I'd like eventually, and not short enough for neatness. Now that parties are on the way I just can't think of what to do with all my straggly ends. I'm determined not to have it cut. · In other words you'd like to think of something that would bridge the gap between now and your dream of a chignon. And I think you'll agree that I've shown you the answer here! Pin your hair back into a very flat bun or pleat. Spray a little hair lacquer to trap any 'travel- minded' strands, then place the prettiest artificial rose you can find directly over the knot to hide those ends. Anchor it firmly, and as extra glamour wear diamante combs on either side. Final touch-and perfect complement-is a true rose perfume.
Chapped hands
Every year when I turn my kitchen calendar to December, I give a shiver. Not at the thought of the money I'll spend at Christmas but because I know too well what the cold winds and nippy mornings will do to my poor hands. Is there any way to stop them cracking and getting hard around the cuticles? · Only greater perseverance-and even more lavish hand cream allowance than you've used in previous years. There are special preparations for keeping nails healthy and hands soft and smooth-I'm sending you the details. Twice a week soak your finger-tips in warmed olive oil for about five minutes just before you go to bed: . And never go out without warm, loose gloves.
In-between stage
Alas, my once-fair hair is turning grey, but at present it is, neither one thing nor the other, and no colour, either in clothes or make-up, seems to suit me. · The root of the trouble lies in your own words, 'neither one thing nor the other.' Have you thought of having your hair made completely white, or having it lightened one or two shades so that the grey does not show? If you decide to have it bleached white, your make-up will be no problem-as long as you keep it light and delicate, you can wear all the colours that suit an ash-blonde. With your original hair colour lightened a shade you can keep to the make-up you have always used.

The average price of a new home then was $12220. about 2.69 times the yearly average wage of $4550. Which was about 2.17 times the price of a new car $2100. And the future was progressive not regressive
