SHOW TALK
by JUNE MORROW
Limelight on Ian Carmichael "
"WHY is Ian Carmichael turning to the stage now?" a Welsh friend asked me when I invited her to come and see The Tunnel of Love which should be showing in London shortly.
My eyebrows shot up in astonishment, for Ian has enjoyed a big theatre following for some years. He is a polished performer who worries about every move and word, yet gives the impression that acting is easy.
In his first straight play, Simon and Laura, he gained such good notices that filmmakers could no longer ignore him as a potential star. Ian had appeared in many films, but as he once told me, ruefully, "You'll have to look very hard to find me on the screen."
Then came his first screen success in the Boulting Brothers' Private's Progress, followed by Brothers in Law, and the smash-hit LuckyJim.
It's a long time since I first met Ian. He was then appearing in High Spirits, with Cyril Ritchard and Diana Churchill, and was crossing his fingers for continued long runs. He had worked hard, and I know he found it a struggle to live up to the standards expected of a West End star. He says his wife Pym was his inspiration when things were tough. Now he is a firm favourite among cinemagoers; and producers are clamouring for his services.
Yet his head has not been turned at all.

A true clown
"It's a question of luck, I suppose," he said at a reception given to celebrate Lucky Jim. Ian meant that he was lucky to be available to accept big film chances-and have parts to suit him. He is like a 'Little Boy Lost' who has the ability to clown even when he doesn't feel like it.
Actually, he not only makes me laugh until I ache, but he can also make me cry. And with his youthful good looks, he is quite a heart-throb.
Teamed with him in The Tunnel of Love is lovely Barbara Murray. The play is about the trials and tribulations of a young couple who, not having children of their own, decide to adopt a child.
Robert Morley is directing.

Film of the Week
THE JOKER IS WILD
Frank Sinatra portrays Joe E. Lewis, a favourite cafe and night club wit in America, who has made millions laugh, yet has never captured true happiness for himself.
Frank is superb in this role, which he plays with deep feeling. The two women stars are Jeanne Crain, who plays the girl Joe loves but loses, and Mitzi Gaynor, whom he finally marries. This is a memorable film, full of the bitter-sweetness which very often lies behind the glamour of success.
