Two Paths
By Catherine Cameron Thaxter
His sire's path, running its
sober line
From house to meadow,
from barn to pump,
Follows necessity's cramped
design;
But the-boy's path circles a
hollow stump,
Meanders a half-moon
course to leap
The pasture fence, though a
gate is there,
And doubles upon itself to
creep
Through a tangle of thorn
and maidenhair. .
And who is to say which
one of the two
Follows the more circuitous
track-
Gaiety's whim-blazed
avenue,
Or the one from the barn
to the pump and back?
