“GO AWAY” said Brenda and she won a film part By SYLVIA M0RTON
THE first words lovely Brenda Pooley ever said to Norman Wisdom were '''Go away, you nasty little man!" They impressed the famous comedian so much that he asked if she'd like to be in a film with him.
Now, after a minor role in Follow The Star, she's doing just that, and has her feet well established on the first rung of the precarious ladder to fame.
“It would never have happened at all if I hadn't had that one line to speak, eighteen year old Brenda admitted.
“I had been working as an usherette for three months at a cinema in Southend, Essex, when Norman Wisdom came to do a week's show. He asked the manager if he could suggest anyone to say this line in a sketch, and I was chosen.
”But I never thought it would lead to all this!
“All this" for Brenda is the whirl in which she has existed since then. Three weeks after the show ended, she received a telegram with the brief message. “Please ring Norman Wisdom at Pinewood Studio.
“He offered me a part in this new film,” she said, eyes shining. “For six days I worked with him at Pinewood. It was so exciting, even though I had only a minor role as a girl at a party.
“I thought, after that was over, that my film career was over, too. But the directors seemed to like me. They had a great many photographs taken and promised me more small roles in films, Then they put me in touch with the agency where I am now modelling.
And while she waits Brenda is earning more money than she ever hoped for.
I suppose most girls dream of being a film star, she said. “And I'm no different.”

THEY'RE MAKING A FORTUNE OUT OF

HANNAH JOHNSTONE made a tea cosy out of one shilling's (about 14 cents)? worth of foam rubber and sold it to a friend for three shillings ( about 42 cents)?.

The result was startling. Orders for Hannah's tea cosies poured in from her hometown, Broxburn, West Lothian.

Hannah recruited her mother, May Logan and two sisters, Margaret Simpson and May Smith, to make a hundred more,
The tea cosy boom earned a paragraph in a local newspaper. Now Hannah is inundated with orders from as far afield as Japan, Canada, the United States, Australia, Holland and South Africa.
Hannah said: , “I made that first tea cosy just to help raise a few shillings for the hall restoration fund at our church, Broxburn West. Instead the tea cosies brought a hundred and sixty pounds to the fund."
Hannah had to appeal to the church work party to help her. Two dozen volunteers cut, sew and pack the cosies, and so far 1,200 cosies have been dispatched.
Hannah, a widow and young looking grandmother, works as hard as ever on the cosies although she has a job as a hospital orderly and runs a home.
Said Mrs Jean Miller, the vicar's wife: “Lots of people send more money than necessary. But the nicest part of the whole thing is the general feeling of goodwill."
So far the fund has raised £6,500 (about $18,265.00)? and needs another £1,000 (about $2,810.00)?. Said MrsMiller: "It looks as if we'll do it on tea cosies alone!"
