THE BLACK ROSE THAT SAYS PARIS

Paris signed the winter fashion story with a lush, black rose. And see how beguiling this black beauty looks, sited low on a party dress (low-backed party dresses are part of the fashion story too).

Stay-fresh nylon rose costs 10s. 6d. (about $1.48)? and here are alternative spots where it may bloom as sweetly:

· PINNED to the collar of a scarlet tweed coat:
· TUCKED into the pocket of a tortoiseshell wool suit:

· WOUND on to red beads and worn with grey or cream:

· SET right on top of shining, party-minded hair:

· PULLED through a glitter bracelet or brooch.

THANK YOU FOR THE Lovely stockings
WHEN a man buys his wife or sweetheart stockings, he usually has one thing in mind, her size. But dear, kind, sweet man, that's only one step in the direction of making us stocking-happy.
We don't, this Christmas, want four pairs of stockings all in different colours. The same shade, please, so that we can match them.
We do want the right leg size. There are three to choose from. So just say if we're tall, medium, or only come heart high.
We don't want the pale grey and beige colours we wore in summer. Smart girls are wearing really dark stockings. Stocking shades that are named wild mink, bronze beaver, black ermine and topaz seal. If you should forget our size, give us stretch-nylons, they give a perfect fit. And if you've heard us complain about being cold, you can give us textured nylons they're warmer.
One more little thing. Most stockings can be bought now in pretty, Christmas packs. Means you can hang them straight on the tree for us, darling. No parcelling for you.
Most teenagers would say a pretty thank you for these lively play-time stockings. In tough-wearing crepe nylon and heart stirring colours they cost 12s. 11d. (about $1.69)?

GIRLS-you talk to much!
So says Marilyn Monroe, the expert on that ole black magic! If you, too, want to be a success with the boys, listen to her recipe for making a hit, passed on by Hollywood columnist, Lydia Lane. Marilyn says: "You must like men, But stop worrying whether they like you. Make yourself attractive, then forget yourself. Learn the art of listening and be interested in what interests him." Then the star who Lydia says is genuinely timid added: "Nervous girls tend to talk too much, but what's wrong with silence sometimes?. . . it adds an air of mystery. . . anyway, strong, silent MEN do very well, just watch 'em on TV Western shows.... quick fix
Making new curtains in time for Christmas? Have pleated ones that hang on ordinary curtain wire, by using clever curtain pins. They work like safety pins; have a hollow part that slips over curtain wire after pleats have been pinned in place. Pins are removed before laundering so that curtains lie flat. Dozen costs 4s. 6d. (about 63 cents)?

HER TINY HANDS AREN'T FROZEN They're gently toasting in water-proofed gabardine mitts with fleecy-lining and cosy tartan cuffs. A scooter-girl special, these! Price is 10s. 6d. (about $1.48)?

The average price of a new home then was $12400 about 2.48 times the yearly average wage of $5010. Which was about 2.28 times the price of a new car $2200. And the future was progressive not regressive
